<![CDATA[Vintage Halloween Toys - My Blog]]>Thu, 23 May 2013 19:54:48 -0800Weebly<![CDATA[So much going on!]]>Tue, 30 Apr 2013 14:44:21 GMThttp://www.vintagehalloweentoys.com/1/post/2013/04/so-much-going-on.htmlWow! It's been a busy past 2 weeks! I went to a big antique show at the Ann Arbor Antiques Market on April 20th. If you've never been, try checking it out. Tons of antiques await you. There were some vintage Halloween items, and I will set aside a couple of extra blogs just to showcase some of the specialty dealers that were there.

There was also a big rummage sale I attended, and I scored a couple of vintage-ish Halloween Trick or Treat pails.

And if that still wasn't enough, I attended "Motor City Nightmares" this past weekend. I met all kinds of horror artists, filmmakers, and there were vintage Halloween items and monster toys for sale. Good times!

For now I'll leave you with a picture from the Ann Arbor Antiques Market, and I will be adding more pictures very soon!

I recently got an email from Elias Rivera from Wisconsin. Elias managed to find this great collection of vintage Halloween toys at an estate sale. What great luck!

April Madness! Basketball! Go Blue! What's this have to do with vintage Halloween or monsters you ask? It reminds me that even an innocent basketball can be turned into a creepy vintage collectible item you fiends will enjoy. I present to you the Super Madballs "Foul Shot" Basketball! Made in the mid/late 1980's, this ghoulish ball was tossed and dunked by monster kids all through America (in limited quantities of course).

<![CDATA[Antique Show & Halloween Hunting]]>Sun, 10 Mar 2013 15:14:07 GMThttp://www.vintagehalloweentoys.com/1/post/2013/03/antique-show-halloween-hunting.htmlSpring is almost here! For many of us in geographical cooler areas, that means a return of garage sales, estate sales, auctions, and antique shows. I checked out a show in Howell Michigan yesterday...Lots of dealers (about 60 of them) were selling all kinds of antiques and collectibles. I only found 4 dealers that had vintage Halloween items. There was someone selling some nice vintage Halloween ribbon for $10, a cute little owl candle for $5, an E Rosen cat and pumpkin candy container for $25, a copper pumpkin garden stake for $20, a Kirchhof "Life of the Party" tin noisemaker (featuring a common design of a half moon) for $16, and a interesting vinyl witch head on a kids size broom for $15. Out of these items, the witch head broom caught my attention the most, and although I think it was reasonably priced, it's not the kind of item that I really had to have in my collection.

Hey, at least there were dealers that had some items. Nobody had any vintage monster toys or old horror paraphernalia. Oh well, better luck next time.

Anyway, I'm glad to see the days getting longer, the cold weather getting less cold, and the hopes of finding some awesome vintage Halloween items for my collection very soon.

<![CDATA[Frankenstein Trash Can!]]>Sat, 02 Mar 2013 14:41:54 GMThttp://www.vintagehalloweentoys.com/1/post/2013/03/frankenstein-trash-can.htmlTrash cans are usually not associated with the word cool...But what if you had one of these in your room? A genuine J. Chein & Company Frankenstein trash can? I would say "that's cool" if I saw that in the corner of some room. This one even had the often missing plastic lid....

This one sold online a while ago for the bargain price of $60...Yes, bargains do still exist from time to time (although I think you might expect to pay a bit higher than $60 if one of these in good condition surfaces...closer to $100).

<![CDATA[Wind-up Frankenstein!]]>Thu, 21 Feb 2013 16:21:13 GMThttp://www.vintagehalloweentoys.com/1/post/2013/02/wind-up-frankenstein.htmlTake a look at this:
Pretty cool eh? Here we have a wind-up Frankenstein that resembles the great Boris Karloff. This 1960's era toy was made in Japan, and fetched $190 last year at an online auction. Finding these in working order isn't always easy to do. This one did work, and I think $190 was a very good price.
I could see this item selling for $200-$300 on a good day.

<![CDATA[Devil Grabber!]]>Thu, 07 Feb 2013 16:53:01 GMThttp://www.vintagehalloweentoys.com/1/post/2013/02/devil-grabber.htmlDevils and Halloween kind of go together like ketchup and fries....Even though devil Halloween stuff is a little less common than skull, pumpkins, or witches, there are some neat items out there to be had.

Here's and example from Fun World:

Devil Halloween "Grab It" by Fun World $27
Fun World made all sorts of fun and cheap little Halloween toys back in the day. This Devil "Grab It" sold online for $27. The eyes, wrinkles, and yellow teeth made for some great campy artwork.

<![CDATA[inexpensive Halloween collectibles ]]>Fri, 01 Feb 2013 14:46:34 GMThttp://www.vintagehalloweentoys.com/1/post/2013/02/inexpensive-halloween-collectibles.htmlIt is possible not to spend an arm and a leg on vintage Halloween collectibles (unless you have a few extra arms and legs stuffed in a closet or in a box somewhere in your basement). With the prices of many pre 1970's Halloween candy containers getting more and more expensive, there are some deals out there for new collectors just getting into this hobby or people who don't have the finances to buy items that cost a small fortune. Here are a couple of examples:
What we have here are two items that fit the bill of being a vintage (or being close to the realm of vintage as they were made in 1990...almost 23 years old) Halloween items that are easy on the pocketbook. The Milky Way pumpkin trick or treat pail was made by Mars candy. The Hershey's Kiss candy container made for a cute little candy dish.

Both of these items are fairly common. These examples both sold for around ten dollars recently (a fairly reasonable price for a near vintage Halloween item in good). Although these items are a little too cute for my taste (I tend to like slightly scarier looking vintage Halloween items), I think they would look good displayed in a shelf with other Halloween items.

One of the extra nice qualities of these items are their link with advertising...There are many advertising collectors out there, and I always get a kick out of seeing companies that put their logo on a Halloween item or run a promotion with Halloween imagery. The link with advertising certainly won't hurt the values of items like (especially as the years tick by).

Mars did make a few other versions of their trick or treat pails (a ghost and a green goblin....of which the goblin tends to be a bit more rare and usually sells for closer to twenty bucks).
